China's Launch Week: Freelander 8, Aistaland GX7 and the ID. AURA T6

Chery-JLR launches the Freelander 8 on 3 September and GAC-Huawei opens GX7 pre-sales on 4 September. The two extended-range SUVs are 19 mm apart in length and run the same Huawei driver-assistance stack. FAW-Volkswagen's ID. China's Launch Week: Freelander 8, Aistaland GX7 and the ID. AURA T6

Three Chinese launches land inside 48 hours this week. Chery and Jaguar Land Rover's Freelander brand puts its first car on sale in Beijing on 3 September. GAC and Huawei's Aistaland opens pre-sales for its GX7 on 4 September. FAW-Volkswagen already opened books on the ID. AURA T6 last Friday.

Look at the first two together and the week stops being a coincidence.

Two Cars, 19 Millimetres Apart, Launching A Day Apart

The Freelander 8 is 5,118 mm long. The Aistaland GX7 is 5,099 mm. Both are extended-range SUVs with a 1.5-litre turbo generator. Both run Huawei's Qiankun ADS 5 driver-assistance system. Both are priced around the mid-300,000 yuan mark, the Freelander 8 from 329,900 yuan (48,650 dollars) after incentives and the GX7 expected to top out near 350,000 yuan. One launches on Wednesday, the other opens pre-sales on Thursday.

Neither company owns the software that will do most of the selling. Huawei does. That is the shape of the premium Chinese SUV segment now: the badge, the chassis and the suspension tuning are the joint venture's contribution, and the part buyers are asked to care about arrives from a supplier who is also arming the competition.

Freelander 8: A JLR Badge On A Chery Platform

Freelander was a JLR model line until 31 March, when it was repositioned as a standalone NEV brand under the Chery-JLR joint venture. The 8 is its first car, built at Changshu since 30 July, with six models planned over five years.

It pairs the 1.5-litre range extender with dual motors for 610 kW (818 hp) and 813 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. A 60.3 kWh CATL ternary pack gives 310 km of CLTC electric range on an 800-volt 6C platform that charges 20 to 80 percent in 12 minutes. Off-road hardware includes a 250 kW two-speed rear motor, plus or minus 10 degrees of rear-wheel steering, dual-chamber air suspension and a mechanical front locker. It is one of the first cars with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8397, rated at roughly three times the previous 8295 platform on CPU and GPU and twelve times on NPU throughput.

Pre-orders passed 10,000 in 48 hours, though Chinese pre-orders are refundable deposits and not deliveries. In August, CnEVPost noticed the Freelander 8 website illustrating its body structure with Nio's ES8 body-in-white diagram. It was replaced about an hour later.

CarsGuide reports the car is expected in Australia in 2027.

Aistaland GX7: Four LiDAR Units And A Category Announcement

GX7 is the second Aistaland, after the GT7 shooting brake that runs from 209,900 to 329,900 yuan. It is 5,099 mm long on a 3,070 mm wheelbase, with a 0.26 drag coefficient, and it carries four LiDAR units including an 896-channel image-grade unit, 38 sensors and eight redundancy systems aimed at Level 3.

A 1.5-litre range extender feeds three motors for 550 kW and a 0 to 100 km/h time in the three-second range. CATL supplies 51.9 kWh and 67.2 kWh packs on 800 volts with 5C charging, for up to 385 km of CLTC electric range and a combined figure Aistaland has now raised from 1,400 km to over 1,500 km. The cabin is among the first with HarmonySpace 6, twin 15.6-inch screens and an 88-inch AR head-up display. Demo cars are in 60 stores across 32 cities.

At the 4 September event, Aistaland says it will explain its definition of a new "spacious five-seater" category.

ID. AURA T6: Volkswagen Buying Chinese Twice

The third car is doing the opposite of the first two. FAW-Volkswagen's ID. AURA T6 opens at 135,900 yuan (20,040 dollars) and tops out at 169,900 yuan. It is a 4,811 mm battery-electric SUV with 59.9 kWh and 77.5 kWh packs for 540 and 660 km CLTC, and a single 170 kW (228 hp) motor.

What matters is underneath. It is built on CEA, the electronic architecture Volkswagen developed with Xpeng. The two LiDAR-equipped variants use a driver-assistance system from Carizon, Volkswagen's joint venture with Horizon Robotics, running a Journey 6H chip rated at 420 TOPS with highway and urban NOA. This is Volkswagen's first all-electric SUV with LiDAR, and it reached that point by licensing architecture from one Chinese company and silicon from another.

Volkswagen plans 13 new models in China in 2026, seven of them NEVs, with FAW-Volkswagen contributing four. The group targets more than 30 new NEVs in China by 2029, and FAW-Volkswagen wants NEVs at roughly 60 percent of its sales by 2030.
