BYD ran a Yangwang U7 for 30,000 km (18,600 miles) in 8 days, 19 hours and 58 minutes, flash-charging it more than 350 times along the way. At the end, the pack still held 98.7 percent of its capacity.
The headline number is the 1.3 percent loss. The number that explains it is 86. Divide 30,000 km by 350 charges and each stop covered 86 km on average, which makes them top-ups rather than cycles. Against a 135.5 kWh pack rated at 800 km CLTC, the whole run adds up to roughly 37 full-pack equivalents. Real cycle-life testing runs into the hundreds. What BYD demonstrated is that Blade Battery 2.0 survives being hammered by high-power DC repeatedly in a short window, which is a genuine and useful result. It is not the same thing as eight days compressing years of ownership.
The Conditions Were The Hard Part
BYD ran the test in Nanning, where daily temperatures topped 36 degrees Celsius (97 F) and relative humidity reached 80 percent. The climate control stayed at 24 degrees throughout. Heat is what actually kills lithium packs, and doing 350 high-rate charges into a hot battery in a humid subtropical city is a harder ask than the distance.
BYD also says the car was pulled at random off a showroom floor. That is precisely the sort of detail a company includes because nobody would assume it otherwise.
One figure needs unpicking. BYD quotes an average speed of 240 km/h (149 mph), but 30,000 km across 8 days, 19 hours and 58 minutes works out to 141.5 km/h elapsed. The 240 figure has to be cruising speed while moving, with charging stops and driver changes falling outside it.
For scale, Mercedes-AMG ran its GT XX concept 40,075 km in 7 days, 13 hours and 24 minutes last year, an elapsed average of 221 km/h. The AMG went further, faster, in less time. It was also a concept built for the exercise rather than a car off a dealer floor, so the comparison cuts both ways.
The Car Underneath The Press Release
The U7 was unveiled in early 2024 and reached Chinese showrooms about twelve months ago. Fewer than six months after first deliveries, Yangwang was already preparing the update, which is a short interval by any manufacturer's standards and a normal one by Chinese premium standards.
The revised car gets 135.5 kWh and 150 kWh battery options. Both run 644 hp motors on each axle for a combined 1,287 hp. The 135.5 kWh version claims 800 km CLTC, the 150 kWh version 1,006 km. A plug-in hybrid sits alongside them with a 52.4 kWh pack and 1,341 hp, so the hybrid is the more powerful car of the two, which is not the hierarchy most brands would choose.
Yangwang did not stop at one car. The company says the update programme covered 758 vehicles across China for a cumulative 10.49 million km (6.5 million miles). That is the number worth holding on to. A single hero run makes a press release; 758 cars and ten million kilometres is what actually tells you whether a battery chemistry holds up.
