The 2027 BMW iX3 can decide you are not getting out yet. Side radars watch for vehicles, bikes and pedestrians approaching from behind, and if opening your door would put one of them on the ground, the electronic latch holds until the hazard has passed. Not a chime. A locked door.
It is the most quotable feature BMW announced with its Neue Klasse safety package, and it is also the one that has been on sale elsewhere for years.
The Genuinely New Feature Is Not The Door
Lexus shipped e-Latch Safe Exit Assist on the NX several years ago, using blind-spot sensors to stop the door unlatching when traffic is coming. Audi offers exit-warning systems that delay or block door opening on the same trigger. BMW's version arrives third, not first, as Carscoops notes.
What BMW does claim as currently unique among rivals is something else entirely: an emergency steering intervention that routes the car around an obstacle while keeping it inside its own lane. The examples given are a person stepping into the road unexpectedly and a cyclist appearing in poor light. Steering around a hazard without leaving the lane is a materially harder problem than declining to unlatch a door, and it is the part of the announcement that is not already available from two other manufacturers.
That is the ordering worth noticing. The feature that writes the headline is the one that was solved years ago. The feature that is actually new needed a paragraph further down.
Everything Else Under The Surface
The same system can steer away from an impending side impact. Automatic emergency braking now recognises animals. If the driver becomes incapacitated, the Attentiveness Assistant takes over, brings the car to a stop, switches on the hazards and places an emergency call without being asked.
Then there is the pedal-confusion case, the one that turns car parks into insurance claims. If the iX3 is travelling at up to 2 km/h (1.2 mph), detects an obstacle within one metre, and the accelerator is suddenly pressed unusually hard, it overrides the input and stops. Read the envelope again: walking pace, one metre, sudden input. It is a safety net cut precisely to the dimensions of a parking space.
That is not a criticism of it working. It is a note that pedal misapplication also happens at speeds where none of those three conditions apply.
Twenty Times The Compute, One Locked Door
All of it runs on a new water-cooled driver-assistance computer that BMW rates at roughly twenty times the processing power of the unit it replaces. The iX3 gets it first because the iX3 is where Neue Klasse lands first, in software as in hardware. The same car has already been used to introduce the platform commercially in China, where the long-wheelbase iX3 L launched at Chengdu in August with three powertrains on an 800-volt architecture.
BMW says the safety features will spread across the range, naming the i3, the X5 and the 7 Series as the models that follow the iX3.
