Chinese passenger vehicle sales fell 24.3 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2026, to 8.29 million units. Exports over the same six months hit 5.1 million vehicles, up 65.3 percent. Those two numbers, presented at the Chengdu Motor Show, describe an industry that is shrinking at home and expanding abroad at roughly the same speed.
The split inside the domestic figure is sharper still. Sales of fuel-powered passenger cars dropped 31.9 percent to 3.69 million units, while new energy vehicle sales rose 7.3 percent and took a larger share of a smaller market. Liu Guoliang, general manager of co-organizer Hannover Milano Fairs Shanghai, called it an interplay of ice and fire.
Fuel-powered passenger cars lost nearly a third of their volume in six months. That is not a transition any more, that is an evacuation.
The Show Floor Reflects The Arithmetic
Chengdu is the first A-level Chinese auto show of the second half of the year, which makes its 1,600 vehicles from around 120 brands a working forecast rather than a display. What is on the stands is what manufacturers believe will sell between now and December.
The answer, consistently, is technology rather than price. Competition on discounting has been running for three years and has reached the point of diminishing returns, so brands arrived at Chengdu leading with driver assistance, charging speed and cabin software. Urban navigation assistance and automated parking are now standard fitment on newly launched models rather than an option pack, which is a genuine change from the same show a year ago.
Chery brought 38 models across five brands. BYD consolidated Dynasty, Ocean, Denza, Fangchengbao and Yangwang into a single presence built around fast charging and assisted driving. Great Wall Motor, Geely Galaxy, Hongqi, BAIC, Deepal and Voyah all widened electrified lineups instead of chasing one headline launch.
Exports Are Carrying The Industry
New energy vehicle exports more than doubled in the first half, to 2.36 million units. The bigger structural shift is that Chinese manufacturers have stopped treating export as shipping. More than 100 Chinese vehicle production bases now operate outside China, with combined overseas capacity above 2.5 million units a year.
Wang Xia, president of the automotive sub-council at the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, argued at the show that sales are a fast variable while technology, brands, partnerships and industrial ecosystems are slow variables, and that the slow ones decide competitiveness. He cited two figures to support it: China accounted for 35.6 percent of global automotive patent publications over the past decade, and Chinese companies hold 17 positions on the 2026 list of the world's top 100 automotive suppliers.
"China used to exchange its market for technology; today, China is using technology to compete in the world," Wang said.
The joint venture model is being rewritten around that reality. Multinational manufacturers are increasingly leaning on Chinese R&D and looking at ways to export China-developed products to other markets, which inverts the arrangement that defined the industry from the 1980s onward. Dongfeng Peugeot and Dongfeng Citroen used their Chengdu stands to push intelligent electrification. Mercedes-Benz gave the long-wheelbase GLE its global debut in Chengdu with an assisted-driving system co-developed with Momenta.
For the domestic market, the pressure is unresolved. A 24.3 percent contraction is not a rounding error, and a show that opens with talk of automotive culture carnivals is a show whose exhibitors need footfall. The 2026 Chengdu Motor Show ran from August 21 to August 30 at the Western China International Expo City.
