Great Wall Motor brought the full Wey lineup to the Chengdu Motor Show with the V8X and V9X SUVs on the stand, and built its entire pitch around a claim that sounds almost antique in 2026: safety and durability get signed off by physical testing on real cars, not by simulation.
Wey's marketing hook is that it does not let AI decide whether the car is safe. At a show where every second stand led with a world model or a cockpit agent, that counts as a differentiator.
Both SUVs sit on the Guiyuan-S platform, which Great Wall says took six years to develop, and both run GWM's Hi4 hybrid system. In its longest-range configuration the system claims 1,659 km of combined range. Great Wall did not attach a test cycle to that number, and given the gap between CLTC and anything measured in traffic, the figure is best read as a ceiling rather than a promise. Even discounted heavily, a plug-in hybrid SUV that clears 1,000 km between fills is a coherent answer to the Sichuan and Chongqing terrain the brand explicitly targeted with this lineup, where charging density falls off quickly outside the two city cores.
The validation program is the part Wey wanted quoted. Heat testing ran in Turpan at ambient temperatures reaching 70 degrees Celsius. Storm simulation used rainfall rates up to 120 mm per hour. Cabin testing included formaldehyde emission checks under high heat, which is a test Chinese buyers have started asking about directly and most manufacturers still discuss only when asked.
Interior materials follow the same argument. Wey specifies infant-grade antibacterial and antiviral fabrics and coconut-shell-carbon floor mats, positioning the cabin as a health claim rather than a luxury one. That is a different sales conversation from ambient lighting and speaker counts, and for a family SUV in a market this crowded, differentiation has to come from somewhere.
The brand is not refusing AI. It uses it for research and development, quality improvement and process efficiency, and both SUVs ship with a native AI cockpit and driving assistant handling parking, complex curves and adverse weather, with the assistant learning driver preferences and adjusting climate, seat position and navigation accordingly. The line Wey drew is narrower than it first appears: AI can help build and operate the car, but it does not get to certify it. Verification stays inside a self-run physical testing program.
Whether that distinction survives contact with cost pressure is the real question. Physical validation at this scale is expensive, and Great Wall is defending it at a moment when Chinese passenger vehicle sales have fallen 24.3 percent year-on-year. Simulation exists precisely because it is cheaper.
