Volkswagen ID. UNYX 08 Launches in China: Xpeng-Co-Developed SUV With 730 km CLTC Range

Volkswagen officially launched the ID. UNYX 08 in China, priced between 239,900 and 299,900 yuan. First VW production car built with Xpeng partnership — Turing chips, VLA 2.0 ADAS, 800V architecture, CATL LFP batteries up to 95 kWh for 730 km CLTC range. Dual-motor AWD delivers 496 hp combined.

Volkswagen ID. UNYX 08 Launches in China: Xpeng-Co-Developed SUV With 730 km CLTC Range

Volkswagen officially launched the ID. UNYX 08 in China today, with pricing between 239,900 and 299,900 yuan (34,700 to 43,380 US dollars) and deliveries starting immediately from VW Anhui's Hefei plant. The SUV carries more weight than its showroom specs suggest. It is the first production vehicle developed jointly with Xpeng, the first VW built on a non-MEB electrical architecture in China, and the first meaningful test of whether the Group's 2023 partnership with Xpeng can actually ship products that compete against Nio and Li Auto.

The answer based on the specification sheet is: probably yes. The UNYX 08 uses Xpeng's Turing smart driving chips, runs VLA 2.0 vision-language-action software, and charges on 800-volt architecture with CATL LFP batteries producing up to 730 kilometers of CLTC range. Those are the numbers Chinese buyers have been demanding from Volkswagen for three years. What took so long is not what the car does, but what the partnership with Xpeng required on the software side to get there.

🚗 Dimensions and Seating

The UNYX 08 measures 5,000 millimeters in length, 1,954 mm in width, and 1,688 mm in height with a 3,030 mm wheelbase. Those are full-size SUV numbers that place it directly against the Li L9, the Aito M9, and the Tesla Model X. Inside, the UNYX 08 is configured as a five or six seater depending on trim, with the six-seater using captain's chairs in the second row.

Exterior design carries Volkswagen's sub-brand UNYX identity, which positions the ID. sub-series distinctly from VW's mainstream ID.3, ID.4, and ID.7 models. Full-width LED lighting front and rear, flush door handles, and aerodynamic wheel designs mark the UNYX 08 as a premium-targeted rather than mass-market Volkswagen.

⚡ Two Powertrain Options, 800V Standard

The single-motor rear-wheel-drive variant delivers 230 kilowatts (308 horsepower) from a rear-mounted permanent magnet motor. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive version adds a 140 kW (188 hp) front motor for a combined output of 370 kW (496 hp). Zero to 100 km/h times have not been officially published but estimates based on the powertrain place the AWD version near 5.0 seconds.

CATL supplies the batteries in three configurations. The base pack is 82.368 kWh, yielding approximately 630 km of CLTC range. The mid-level 95.04 kWh pack pushes range to 700 km in single-motor trim and 730 km in the highest-efficiency configuration. All variants use 800V electrical architecture with DC fast charging capabilities that Volkswagen has not yet quantified publicly but which mirror Xpeng's 400 kW peak from its G9 and G7 models.

🤝 The Xpeng Technical Foundation

The ID. UNYX 08 uses Xpeng's in-house developed Turing AI chip, with two units working in parallel to deliver the computational capacity needed for advanced driver assistance and cabin intelligence. The vehicle runs Xpeng's VLA 2.0 vision-language-action framework, which handles city and highway navigation-guided pilot functions using a unified software stack rather than separate ADAS and infotainment systems.

This is the part of the UNYX 08 that Volkswagen could not have produced on its own timeline. Xpeng's autonomous driving and intelligent cockpit stacks represent roughly four years of Chinese market development that Volkswagen's in-house CARIAD teams had been unable to match at acceptable cost and speed. The partnership gives Volkswagen immediate competitive parity without the multi-year internal development the Group was facing.

🔧 Production Ramp at VW Anhui

VW Anhui's Hefei plant has been running production for the UNYX 08 since March 2026. The facility was purpose-built for electric vehicle assembly and was structured specifically to handle vehicles based on non-MEB architectures. This flexibility is critical for Volkswagen's broader China product roadmap, which calls for multiple Xpeng-partnered vehicles over the next 24 months.

Pre-sales began in late March with customer allocations filled within days. Today's launch converts those pre-orders into delivered vehicles, making the UNYX 08 the first wave of Volkswagen's new Chinese electric product cycle.

🏁 What Comes Next at Auto China 2026

The UNYX 08 shares its formal Beijing debut with four other Volkswagen Group premieres on April 21 at the Group Media Night. Alongside it will be the FAW-VW ID. AURA T6 on the CEA platform, the Audi E7X China-exclusive SUV, and Porsche's all-electric Cayenne. The UNYX 08, however, is the first to hit dealerships with customer cars already in driveways.

Pricing, deliveries, and Xpeng partnership outcomes over the next six months will determine whether the 730 km CLTC number translates to sustained sales volume. But for today, Volkswagen has shipped a car that checks the boxes Chinese buyers have been demanding. That is by itself a notable change in direction.
