NIO founder William Li confirmed during a user event in Wuhan that the company is currently supplying battery packs to McLaren. The cells are NIO's proprietary 4680 large cylindrical format, with initial packs around 10 kWh destined for McLaren's hybrid models.

The partnership traces back through shared Abu Dhabi ownership. L'imad Holding, wholly owned by the Abu Dhabi government through the Department of Finance, maintains a 17.9% stake in NIO and completed its McLaren acquisition (through the former CYVN Holdings) in April 2025. Reports of battery development plans surfaced in June 2025, the partnership was officially confirmed in September, and now the supply arrangement is public.

Li previously stated that NIO's technical service revenue "primarily came from the British automaker," which gives concrete financial weight to a relationship that started as strategic alignment and has become an active supply chain.

What It Means

NIO producing battery packs for a third party is a significant shift from being purely a vehicle manufacturer. The 4680 cells represent NIO's in-house battery development capability being monetized outside its own product lineup. Low-volume manufacturing is expected through 2026, scaling as McLaren's hybrid program expands.

For McLaren, sourcing from NIO provides cells optimized for performance applications without the development cost of building battery expertise internally. For NIO, it generates revenue from technology that would otherwise serve only its own vehicles and validates the 4680 program commercially.
