MG has unveiled the 4X, an electric SUV that gets 317 miles (510 km) out of a 53.95 kWh battery. The trick: semi-solid-state cells with only 5% liquid electrolyte.

The MG 4X sits above the MG 4 hatchback as a taller crossover variant, sharing the E3 electronic architecture. At 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,551 mm tall on a 2,750 mm wheelbase, it's compact by SUV standards and clearly aimed at the BYD Atto 2 segment.

The Battery Math

A 53.95 kWh pack delivering 510 km of range works out to roughly 9.4 km per kWh, or about 5.9 miles per kWh. That's notably efficient. Curb weight sits at 1,485 kg, which partly explains the range figure. Lighter vehicle, less energy per kilometer.

The semi-solid-state chemistry claims improved thermal stability and better performance across temperature extremes compared to conventional lithium-ion cells. MG hasn't disclosed specific energy density numbers, but getting 510 km from under 54 kWh in a vehicle this size suggests meaningful gains over the liquid-electrolyte packs in the standard MG 4.

Motor specifications haven't been released yet, which is an odd omission for a vehicle launch. Power output, torque, and acceleration figures are all TBA.

Design and Interior

The front end borrows from MG's current design language: triangular headlights connected by a thin light bar, large lower air intakes, and black wing mirrors. The rear echoes the MG S5's sharp taillights. A panoramic glass roof comes standard.

Interior details remain unconfirmed. Expect shared components with the MG 4 hatchback, likely including the Oppo co-developed infotainment display with physical steering wheel and console buttons.

MG hasn't announced pricing or market availability, but the 4X's positioning suggests it will target the sub-€30,000 segment where MG has been building volume across Europe.
