Renault debuted the Filante SUV in South Korea on January 13, a flagship E-segment crossover built on Geely's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). The same platform underpins vehicles from Volvo, Polestar, and Geely's own brands. Renault is using Chinese engineering to build a premium SUV for markets outside Europe. The irony is deliberate, and the economics make it work.
Production takes place at the Busan plant in South Korea, with the local market getting first access. Renault says the Filante will expand to other regions but will "likely remain off-limits for Europe," where the company has its own platform strategy and no interest in explaining to French politicians why its flagship rides on Chinese bones.
The CMA Advantage
Geely's CMA platform supports ICE, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains. Renault hasn't disclosed which options the Filante will offer, but the platform's flexibility means all three are technically possible. No specific dimensions, power figures, or pricing have been released.
The design language follows Renault's latest direction: LED elements integrated into the front bumper, an arcing aerodynamic roofline, muscular rear shoulders, and a cabin focused on occupant comfort. The name references the 1956 Etoile Filante record car and the more recent Filante Record concept that achieved 1,008 km of range without recharging.
Renault's Global Reset
The Filante represents Renault's upmarket push in markets where its current lineup (Duster, Arkana, Austral) tops out in the C/D segment. South Korea, India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia are the likely targets. These are markets where Renault has existing dealer networks but lacks a flagship product.
Using Geely's platform instead of developing one in-house saves billions in R&D. The trade-off is brand perception: Renault is betting that buyers in Seoul and Mumbai care more about what the car does than where the platform was designed. Given that Volvo has been building on Geely platforms for a decade without apparent damage to its brand, the bet has precedent.
