Taycan Turbo GT Runs 9.08s Quarter-Mile at Sydney Dragway

The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package ran a 9.083-second quarter-mile at 156.61 mph (252.04 km/h) at Sydney Dragway during a public Wednesday night drag meet. Porsche claims it's the fastest time achieved by an unmodified production car on an Australian drag strip.

The run used the Taycan Turbo GT's launch control, which unlocks up to 760 kW of overboost power with peak bursts of 815 kW lasting two seconds. That's 1,108 hp in momentary spikes. On a prepped drag strip surface with consistent grip, the Taycan puts the power down cleanly enough to break into the 9-second bracket.

The Parachute Problem

At 156.61 mph, the Taycan exceeded the International Hot Rod Association's speed threshold requiring parachute installation at Australian drag strips. An unmodified production electric sedan running fast enough to need a parachute is the kind of detail that would have been absurd five years ago.

Context

The quarter-mile time positions the Taycan Turbo GT against dedicated performance EVs like the Tesla Model S Plaid (which has recorded low-9-second passes) and the Rimac Nevera (which holds sub-9-second claims). The difference: the Taycan did this at a public event, on a public drag night, with spectators and street cars in the adjacent lanes.

WLTP electrical consumption for the Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package: 20.8-20.7 kWh/100 km.
