Subaru Three-Row EV Debuts in New York with 420 HP

Subaru will unveil a three-row electric crossover at the New York Auto Show on April 1, packing 420 hp (313 kW) and almost certainly sharing its platform with the redesigned Toyota Highlander.

That makes it the fourth badge-engineered product in the Subaru-Toyota partnership, joining the Solterra/bZ4X, the Trailseeker, and the Uncharted. A teaser image shows a front end consistent with Subaru's current EV design language: split lighting units, an illuminated logo, and a roof rack. The shark fin antenna is there too.

⚡ Toyota Highlander Underpinnings, Subaru Badge

Subaru isn't confirming the connection, but the math is straightforward. The Highlander offers 77 kWh and 95.8 kWh battery packs, front-wheel and all-wheel drive options, and outputs ranging from 221 hp (165 kW) in FWD to 338 hp (252 kW) in AWD. Subaru's claimed 420 hp figure sits above both Highlander trims, suggesting either a higher-output dual-motor configuration or a performance-oriented launch variant.

Range should fall between 270 and 320 miles (435 to 515 km), based on the Highlander's EPA ratings. Expect a NACS charging port, DC fast charging capable of 10-80% in around 30 minutes, and a dual-level 120V/240V home charging cable.

Inside, the Highlander comes with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch infotainment screen. Subaru will likely adopt both, along with the six-speaker audio system and 64-color ambient lighting.

The real question is how Subaru will differentiate beyond the badge. The Solterra added stiffer suspension tuning and an X-Mode all-wheel-drive system compared to the bZ4X. A similar approach here, with Subaru's symmetrical AWD philosophy applied to a three-row EV, could give it a genuine identity. Or it could be a Highlander with different headlights.

The Toyota Highlander arrives late 2026. Expect the Subaru variant on the same timeline, with pricing likely positioned a few thousand dollars below the Toyota equivalent.
