A brief history about xpeng: Guangzhou Xiaopeng Motors Technology Co. Ltd., better known as XPeng, is a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer founded in 2014 by Xia Heng and He Tao, two former executives of the GAC Group, one of China’s oldest automakers. Their experience in the automotive industry, combined with strong backing from major investors such as Alibaba and Xiaomi, provided the foundation for XPeng’s rapid emergence as one of China’s most dynamic EV startups.

The company introduced its first prototype in 2016, an electric crossover that showcased XPeng’s early commitment to innovation and technology. After a year of testing and development, XPeng launched its first production vehicle, the G3, in 2018. Unlike many electric vehicles of its time, the G3 came equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), giving it a competitive edge and quickly attracting customers across China.

Seeking to distinguish itself further in both design and technology, XPeng hired Algerian-born designer Rafik Ferrag as head of design. Having previously worked for Citroën and Honda, Ferrag brought a new level of sophistication to the brand’s aesthetic identity. His first project for XPeng was the sleek and futuristic P7 sedan, unveiled at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. The P7 became a defining model for the company, blending cutting-edge software, long-range performance, and elegant design.

XPeng’s early years were not without challenges. The company faced high-profile legal disputes, including lawsuits from Tesla and Apple alleging intellectual property violations. While XPeng was cleared of wrongdoing in the Tesla case, an engineer involved in the Apple dispute pleaded guilty to misconduct. These incidents marked a difficult learning period for the young automaker but did not derail its ambitions.

In 2018, XPeng took a significant step toward global expansion by opening a facility in the United States and receiving approval from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to test autonomous vehicles. This milestone underscored XPeng’s determination to compete at the forefront of EV technology. The company’s rapid progress attracted further investments, including $400 million from Xiaomi and additional funding from Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Investment Company and the Qatar Investment Authority. Within just a few years, XPeng had launched five models and introduced updates to its original G3 crossover.

XPeng’s entry into the European market in 2021 marked another bold move. The company launched the P7 sedan in key markets such as Norway, where its blend of range, safety, and futuristic technology earned widespread praise. The P7 featured an impressive suite of driver assistance technologies, including Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities, AI-powered interfaces, and an advanced parking system capable of operating without human input. With a competitive price and a luxurious feel, the P7 positioned XPeng as a credible alternative to established EV brands.

In addition to cars, XPeng diversified its innovation portfolio by investing in future mobility solutions. The company established an aerospace subsidiary dedicated to developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, often referred to as “flying cars.” This bold venture highlights XPeng’s commitment to redefining urban mobility and integrating air transport into its long-term vision.

Recent years have seen XPeng strengthen its technological ecosystem, developing proprietary software and autonomous driving systems under the XPilot platform. The company’s advanced driver assistance technology has positioned it as one of the leaders in China’s intelligent EV race, with features such as highway navigation assist, smart parking, and over-the-air updates continually improving user experience.

Today, XPeng stands as one of China’s most innovative and forward-thinking EV manufacturers. With a focus on sustainability, connectivity, and user-centered design, the company continues to expand across global markets while pushing the boundaries of electric mobility. Whether on the road or in the air, XPeng represents the next generation of intelligent transportation, combining technology, design, and ambition to shape the future of mobility worldwide.
