subaru

A brief history about subaru: Subaru means “unite,” a name that reflects the six stars on its logo, symbolizing the six companies that came together under the Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) group. The largest star represents Fuji Heavy Industries itself. The company began in 1917 in Japan as an aircraft research laboratory and soon transitioned to building airplanes.

After World War II, Subaru developed a scooter called the Fuji Rabbit, made from leftover aircraft parts. Over time, the organization branched into various businesses producing scooters, buses, engines, and chassis. Under the leadership of CEO Kenji Kita, the company ventured into automobile manufacturing, launching its first car in 1954—the Subaru 1500 (P1). This was followed by the Subaru 360 in 1958, the Sambar in 1961, the 1000 in 1965, and later the 1100 and R2 in 1969. The 1970s saw the debut of the Leone, and the 1980s added the Alcyone (1985) and the Legacy (1989) to Subaru’s growing lineup.

In the 1990s, Subaru shifted its focus from small vehicles to rally performance, developing cars such as the Vivio and the Impreza. Various versions of the Impreza WRX achieved global recognition, winning world championships with legendary drivers like Colin McRae.

Drawing on its aeronautical heritage, Subaru introduced key innovations to the automotive industry, including the use of horizontally opposed “boxer” engines and monocoque construction. It remains the only automaker to offer all-wheel drive as standard on most of its models. Subaru was also the first manufacturer to introduce electronic continuously variable transmission (ECTV), providing smoother acceleration while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Subaru’s commitment to sustainability is equally remarkable. Its plant in Lafayette, Indiana, became the first automotive factory in the United States to achieve zero-landfill status, meaning it generates no waste. The company also runs extensive recycling programs for its vehicles and invests heavily in hybrid and fuel-efficient technologies, reinforcing its dedication to environmental protection.
