It became the fastest-accelerating electric vehicle by 2013, establishing Croatia’s first high-performance electric car manufacturer as a serious player among established giants. The journey began years earlier when Mate Rimac, a young innovator and racing enthusiast, converted his old BMW E30 drift car into a fully electric machine that would later define his vision for the future of performance vehicles.

Founded in 2009, Rimac Automobili grew from a small workshop where Mate and a handful of engineers developed an electric powertrain entirely from scratch. Their first creation, nicknamed the “Green Monster,” delivered an astonishing 600 PS (593 hp) and set five FIA world records for electric vehicle acceleration in 2011. This achievement attracted investors and proved that a small Croatian company could compete on a global stage through sheer innovation and engineering brilliance.

Every component of Rimac’s cars was designed and built in-house, from the battery systems to the drivetrain and software. The Concept One, initially planned for a limited production of 88 units but later reduced to just eight, was a showcase of handcrafted precision and groundbreaking technology. It became not only a hypercar but also a proof of concept for Rimac’s proprietary systems, which soon began drawing the attention of major automakers worldwide.

In 2014, Rimac took a strategic leap by using the Concept One as the official safety car for the inaugural Formula E championship. This move placed the brand in the global spotlight and demonstrated its leadership in electric performance technology. At the same time, Rimac’s battery and drivetrain expertise led to partnerships with leading automotive brands that sought advanced electric solutions for their own models.

By 2018, the company’s reputation had grown enough to attract Porsche AG, which acquired a 10% stake and provided the financial strength to accelerate Rimac’s development program. The small start-up had evolved into a sophisticated technology hub employing over 1,000 people by 2020. That same year, Rimac introduced its next-generation hypercar, the Nevera, a vehicle engineered entirely in-house and designed to redefine what electric performance could achieve.

The Nevera represented a monumental leap forward, equipped with four independent electric motors and revolutionary torque vectoring systems. It broke multiple speed and acceleration records, confirming Rimac’s dominance in the electric hypercar sector. Beyond performance, it also showcased Rimac’s ability to design, engineer and manufacture critical EV components used by other carmakers, further solidifying its role as a technology leader.

In 2021, Rimac reached another milestone by forming a new joint venture, Bugatti Rimac, in which it held a 55% controlling stake while Porsche retained 45%. This partnership brought together two icons from different eras — Bugatti’s legacy of craftsmanship and Rimac’s forward-looking electric innovation. It marked the beginning of a new chapter for both brands and positioned Rimac at the forefront of the hypercar revolution.

Despite global challenges, Rimac began delivering the Nevera in 2022, earning international acclaim for creating the world’s fastest production electric vehicle. From a modest Croatian garage to a partnership with one of the most prestigious names in automotive history, Rimac’s story reflects the power of vision, persistence and cutting-edge engineering in redefining what performance means in the electric age.
