Gordon Murray Automotive

Brand History

Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) is a British high-performance car manufacturer founded in 2017 by the South African-born engineer Gordon Murray. Based in Dunsfold, Surrey, England, the company was created from Murray’s lifelong pursuit of engineering purity and driver connection. After decades shaping Formula 1 history and redefining the concept of the road-going supercar, Murray founded GMA with one clear goal: to build the most engaging and lightweight drivers’ cars in the world.

Gordon Murray’s career began long before GMA existed. In 1969, he left South Africa for the United Kingdom hoping to join Lotus, but instead he was hired by Brabham, where he designed some of the most successful Formula 1 cars of the 1970s and 1980s. His early work included the Brabham BT42, followed by the championship-winning BT49 and BT52, which earned world titles in 1981 and 1983. These achievements established Murray as one of the most visionary engineers in motorsport.

In 1986, Murray became Technical Director at McLaren, where he designed the iconic MP4/4, one of the most dominant Formula 1 cars ever built. Driven by Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, it won fifteen of sixteen races in the 1988 season. A few years later, Murray’s genius moved from racetracks to the open road with the creation of the McLaren F1, launched in 1992. Its carbon-fiber monocoque, central-seat layout, and naturally aspirated V12 engine set new performance benchmarks and made it the fastest production car in the world at the time.

After leaving McLaren in 2004, Murray experimented with innovative concepts such as the T.25 city car, exploring efficiency and sustainability. Yet his passion for performance never faded. In 2017, he founded Gordon Murray Automotive, returning to the world of high-performance engineering with a focus on analog purity and uncompromising design.

In 2020, GMA revealed its first masterpiece, the T.50, powered by a Cosworth-built 3.9-liter V12 capable of revving to 12,100 rpm. Weighing under one thousand kilograms, it featured an active rear fan system inspired by Murray’s legendary Brabham BT46B. Every component was crafted to enhance balance, response, and precision, delivering a raw, immersive driving experience.

By 2023, the company had introduced the T.33, a more refined but equally purist supercar that shared the same lightweight philosophy. It used GMA’s proprietary iStream production process, a technology that combines high rigidity, low weight, and minimal environmental impact. Both models reinforced GMA’s reputation for creating machines where beauty, simplicity, and engineering integrity coexist.

In recent years, Gordon Murray Automotive has stood apart from the mainstream industry by rejecting over-automation and excessive digitalization. While most manufacturers chase hybrid and electric trends, GMA remains loyal to manual gearboxes, naturally aspirated engines, and direct mechanical feel. Each car is hand-built by artisans, designed not to impress computers but to thrill human beings.

In 2024, GMA expanded its lineup with the T.50s Niki Lauda, a track-focused evolution honoring the Formula 1 champion. The car pushed aerodynamic efficiency to new extremes and became one of the most capable track machines ever built. Murray also confirmed development of lightweight electric sports cars, promising to merge sustainability with the brand’s signature mechanical honesty.

The T.50 and T.33 have appeared across major automotive media, including Top Gear, The Grand Tour, and international supercar events. Critics consistently describe GMA vehicles as the last true connection between driver and machine in an age of increasing automation. Their design, performance, and craftsmanship have earned global recognition and a devoted following among collectors.

Today, Gordon Murray Automotive represents the essence of engineering excellence and driving purity. Each car is assembled by hand, with every detail serving a functional purpose. In a world moving rapidly toward autonomy and electrification, GMA continues to celebrate the art of driving itself, reminding enthusiasts everywhere that the ultimate performance machine is still the one that responds to human touch.
